Your lips are saying no, but your eyes…

Finally, a Snuggie for the office. Meet the Snuggle Suit. You can get down on your knees and thank JC Penney for this miracle of modern fashion. It’s a Snuggie for the gal-on-the-go, or a Slanket for the upwardly mobile (and outwardly color blind). Someone please nominate the designer of this beauty for a Nobel Peace Prize, because citizens of all nations can agree upon the greatness of this fashion neccesity. One quick question: When will the men’s version be available?

2010 Predictions…Forecasts…

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

As we wind down 2009, our thoughts turn to 2010 and what the New Year will bring to Newbury Street.  Looking into our crystal ball, here are some predictions.

1.  At least one, if not two major athletic shoe companies will open on Newbury Street.

2.  The Pottery Barn space will be occupied by a major UK retailer.

3.  The UK invasion of Newbury Street will continue as additional UK based and/or themed retailers open.

4.  Diane Von Furstenberg will open a store on Newbury Street.

5.  While there will be the usual new vacancies during the first quarter of 2010, by year end, Newbury Street will be over 95% occupied.

6.  The Boston Globe will actually publish a positive article about Newbury Street (ok…we can all wish)!

The Globe Strikes Again Part Two - Upon Further Review

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Let’s look at this a little more closely with some data from the report…

Newbury Street rents dropped 10.7%
Rodeo Drive rents dropped 25.4%
Madison Avenue dropped 27.1%
In Chicago, East Oak Street and State Street dropped 17.6% and 14.3%, respectively
In SF, Post Street dropped 12.5%
In Washington, DC, Georgetown and Chevy Chase dropped 15.4%, and 21.4% respectively

Of all the streets Cushman & Wakefield surveyed in the report, only North Michigan Avenue (Chicago), Lincoln Road (Miami), 5th Avenue (NYC), Worth Avenue (Palm Beach) and Union Square (SF) dropped at a rate less than Newbury Street.  None of these streets posted an increase in rents.

Total street surveyed in the US 16, total streets where rent dropped at a greater rate than Newbury Street, 10. (63%)

Maybe the headline should read “Newbury Street holds up better than most retail streets”  Oops, that might be too positive to sell papers.

Openings…Good News (Does the press care?)

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Let’s see…Madewell opened in February, Pinkyotto in May, 7 For All Mankind in August, Ben Sherman and S. Kuhlman in September…and that is just on The Newbury Line. Interesting how all this positive news doesn’t seem to make the newspapers…

The Newbury Line recently wrote to a Herald fashion columnist and mentioned all of these openings which were overlooked (except for Ben Sherman which she had the wrong address for) in her recent column that included the words “Is Newbury Street Down and Out?”

Boston Herald Article

What do you think…could she have spent a little more time researching the subject, or do people buy papers to read bad news?

What were they thinking?

Wednesday, August 5th, 2009

From time to time TNL Staff may comment on an event on Newbury Street, a fashion faux pas (one of our guilty pleasures is www.gofugyourself.com) or simply something that is bothering us.  We file these comments under “What were they thinking?”

Keeping this in mind…Lisa’s Nails is opening on the first floor of 170 Newbury Street….does Newbury Street need ANOTHER nail salon, especially one that takes prime retail space?  To the owners of 170 Newbury Street (Everyone say this together) WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?
